Pancreatic cancer – Prevention and Treatment
Pancreatic cancer, which is currently the fifth leading cause of cancer death in one of the United States is the growth of malignant cells in the pancreas, a pear-shaped organ located just below and behind the stomach. Pancreas secretes digestive enzymes into the small intestine via the bile ducts and islets of Langerhans in the pancreas secretes hormones (insulin and glucagon) in the blood. Pancreatic cancer decreases the digestion and can block the bile duct as it grows. Most cases occur after age 50, men are more often affected than women. The cure is sometimes possible early diagnosis and surgical removal. However, pancreatic cancer is very difficult to diagnose and are often spread when symptoms appear, so that a cure is rare. The tumor cells of the islets (insulinomas) are much less common. They release large amounts of insulin, leading to blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Only about 10 percent of insulinomas are malignant, and symptoms of hypoglycemia can be eliminated by surgical removal of the tumor.
