Okay
          What I find disturbing on this book is the realy small explanation lines. It is to much info on one page... It realy is tiring to read this book. You need big glasses to read..

          Iyengar's art is stellar in yoga instruction
          My yoga instructor includes this text in his Yoga Teacher Trainings as Iyengar is the creme de la creme of the art of teaching proper alignment. Would highly recommend book.

          Light on Yoga is also light on interest. I ordered this book and The Yoga Bible. I am using the Yoga Bible and think it is very well put together and easy to use.

          This book truly is the bible of modern yoga, and was purchased in preparation for a yoga teacher training class.

          5.0 out of 5 stars
          Essential, but not for beginners
          The "bible" for serious hatha yoga practitioners, although you probably will never be able to achieve a large percentage of the postures illustrated. At least, I won't!

This is the definitive text on hatha yoga. This is the book you want if you are serious about starting your practice of yoga. It is also a reference text for teachers used in the professional world. It is no exaggeration to say that all yoga instructors in the United States know this book, and most of them have a copy and refer to it regularly. Iyengar 's text is characterized by a perfection of content, a "comprehensive, thorough, step-by-step how to" for instruction in asana and pranayama. There are 602 photos of Iyengar himself demonstrating the poses with the flexibility and accuracy extraordinary. I have an early edition hard cover book with pictures gathered together at the bottom of the book. The newer editions have the photos spaced appropriately throughout the text. The introduction of 34 pages entitled, "What is yoga? "is a concise overview of the nature, purpose and extent of yoga as gleaned of ancient texts, especially Pantajali 's Yoga Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita and Swatmarama' yoga Pradipika ( Iyengar what obtains under Sanskrit, Yoga Dipika) s Hatha. These are the three great texts of yoga and the Iyengar knows. This introduction rewards patient study, and is the kind of strong text that must be returned to several times, but it is written in an accessible, inspired, and inspiring. Iyengar emphasizes precision and careful technique and a mindfulness of the whole body as necessities for success in hatha yoga. From my experience this mindfulness is absolutely essential for two main reasons. One, you probably tend or get a muscle, usually several little ones, if your mind wanders or if you practice with your attention elsewhere. In this. Two, the full import and effect of asana can not be assessed nor psychological and spiritual lessons implicit in practice be understood without deep and continuous concentration - the mindfulness leading to meditation. The technical poses includes some commentary on beneficial effects. It should be noted that according to tradition there are 84,000 poses known (or perhaps the number is 840,000), of which around 84 would be necessary for health and growth of samadhi. He also said that a cat was traditionally the first teacher of yoga. I want to note that only a gifted person with a normal flexibility can expect master all the poses qu'Iyengar shows. So don 't despair Most authorities will tell you about a dozen will do. Although the detailed instruction is given in only three pranayama, the issue nevertheless is fully presented and explained in twenty-five elegant and succinct pages that constitute Part III of this book. Included and noteworthy is Iyengar 's well-aware of the warning: "Pneumatic tools can cut through the hardest rock. In Pranayama the yogi uses his lungs as pneumatic tools. If they are not used properly, they destroy the tool and the person using it. "There are two annexes, one on" Asana Courses, "which can be useful for teachers or for those who like a highly structured approach. The other is on the curative effects of asana for various disorders including arthritis, asthma, diabetes, flatulence, etc.. I take this second appendix with some reservation and note that a comprehensive study of curative effects of asana awaits its great genius. Nevertheless, the traditional experience, which Iyengar is based, is part of the ancient practice of ayurvedic medicine, one of the great healing traditions of the world, and as such commands the highest respect. Personally, it is obvious to me that certain asanas facilitate certain normal body processes and is aware that a concentration of attention and the flow of blood to a part made of the body can help the body '; curative mechanisms s. Asana, properly understood in this context, is part of a maintenance program for a healthy body. Iyengar 's is primarily a practical approach has filtered into the ancient traditions of India. As such it is a distinctive cast Hindu, but its inevitable direction. (The separation of the yoga of Hinduism is like the test to decipher an omelette.) Iyengar But trying to get a universal approach and doing an excellent job of carrying it out. Note that the introduction: "The food, the substance of support yet consumes all life is regarded as a phase of Brahman. It should be eaten with the feeling that each piece one can gain the strength to serve the lord. If being a vegetarian is a purely personal because each person is influenced by the traditions and customs of the country where he was born and is multiplied. ";
